LYRICS – DO ME RIGHT

I come from the poor side of town
Tooth Fairy she never come around
I don’t know but I’ve been told
Stay here long and you just grow old

But someday soon I’m gonna pack my bags
Start brand new, See you later Jack
See I’ve got a friend just across the tracks
She’s gonna help me get there and back

CHORUS
Just do me right, do me right
Baby, come on just a do me right
I’ll help you along, won’t do you wrong
Baby, baby just do me right

I can’t relive yesterday
Tomorrow may not come my way
I’ve spent just one too many years
Cryin’ just one too many tears

I used to believe in chariot skies
But calvary don’t come in my size
I’ve got a friend I’ve been thinkin’ ‘bout
She specializes in the down and out

CHORUS

*************************

I wrote this in early 1994 in Tongduchon, South Korea. I was playing in a Southern Rock band on a 3 month tour of military bases up by the DMZ. For one month the band stayed off-base and across the railroad tracks from the little party area where the soldiers would go off base.

After our gigs we would meet up late at night with the Tongduchon party crowd, who would go across those railroad tracks to forget about home for a little while; and to forget that if North Korea were to attack they would be mulled over in a matter of minutes…

This song is about the juice girls and comfort girls across those railroad tracks.

LYRICS – SONG FOR MY FATHER

I’ll tell you what life’s about
Back in 1980 Daddy owned the South
I went to Europe and private school
Daddy said “I’ll always take a care of you”

Sent Momma roses Valentine’s Day
Two days later took his jet and flew away
Went down South blew his money on a whore
Now me and Momma we’re a dirt down poor

Chorus
Well let me play you a melody ‘n sing you a song
Try to show everybody life ain’t wrong
Do my best, you know I would, but I can’t save everybody
Wish I could

Daddy made money the old fashioned way
Laundered twenty grand a day by Biscayne Bay
IRS came, partners died
Daddy he got set up good to do some time

All his friends disappeared
But m’ Daddy got paroled within a year
“Son, can you help your Father please?
I got some business for you in the Florida Keys.”

Chorus

Solos

I worked for Daddy ‘bout a year
Twenty grand a month sniffin’ coconut air
I found out what life’s about
Daddy he was givin’ Cuban Neckties out

If you drink vodka straight
Never start confessing names and giving dates
Daddy choked on Smirnoff and Lime
Daddy he will never screw me one more time

Chorus
I couldn’t save Daddy
But I wish I could

I have no particular place to go

I harbor no bitter consequence
Of any events in my life
But my future doubts grow more intense
While my nation’s cut with a knife

CHORUS

**************************

In 1992 I was playing with a country band at the Museum Club in Flagstaff, Arizona. Near the bar was an Indian Reservation and I got to be friends with some of the local Native Americans. They suggested I read “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee”, which I did.

The song was meant to describe the pain of endless wandering to find home, when the person knows their home is forever gone and they will never reach it.

LYRICS – CAN’T WIN FOR LOSIN’

If this had been a real life
I would have been told what to do
And if it’s just a test
Why do I feel like such a fool?

Well the only thing that I’ve learned
Is that I don’t know everything
The only thing I know for sure
Is I don’t have much room to complain

CHORUS
Well they tell me to look on the bright
And wait for what is meant to be
But if it’s all the same
When you can’t win for losin’
You don’t even want to play the game

BRIDGE
Now why won’t you tell me
Why I got to be more than just a man?
And tell me why I got to smile
When happy is the last thing that I am

CHORUS

When you can’t win for losin’
You just don’t even want to play the game

**************************

I wrote this song in early 1994 while spending 3 months playing along the DMZ in South Korea with a band called the “Hardriders”. We did mainly Southern Rock music at military bases in South Korea to entertain the troops and officers.

It was a tense time in South Korea with constant threats of attack from North Korea. The band and I were shuffling every night to new locations to setup for the night’s performance on different bases. I was really exhausted and felt like I wasn’t utilizing my talents to the best of my ability.

So “Can’t Win For Losin’” was an expression of that time and the feeling that no matter what you try to do, nothing seems to work out.
